Alternative medicine, fungal lung infection , weaning of prednisone, what do you suggest ? My dear 86 yr old mom lost my dad in death after 63 years Jan 3, 2009. She took care of him devotedly for 2 years at home and he had dementia, So she lost her health, but before that she was as healthy as a horse. She has been using western medicine and I can't get her to make a total switch, but I've got her juicing. What tinctures, remedies, etc, can we use to help her body. Her fungal lung infection she has had for about 6+ months and on prednisone ( icky) and she has had leg infections in her leg skin from falling from meds and has had to have her legs wrapped. So what can we be giving her like a tincture or supplements to make her better. I can sneak these ideas to her if they are easy as she really wants to get well. I know she has the constitution to do it I live 14 hours away and have health issues myself that prevent me from traveling, but she emails me. I figure her intestinal tract is a mess from all the meds she has been on and her liver, but where would you suggest we start :) Thanks so so so much :)

BooChan replied: "Just remember that certain remedies or alternative herbs etc. can counter act what she's taking from western medicine and may cause more problems than good. Everything has an interaction. It might be better to ask the doc if using an alternative treatment would be harmless first? I can tell you that the prednisone is a steriod. It does have to be weaned off otherwise it is hard on the adrenal glands. Plus steriods slow the healing proceess and and contribute to infection since it lowers the immune response. You may see an improvement in her legs once the steroid is discontinued. One thing you can do is promote protein consumption. It is good for the healing of the skin. BUt, make sure she is not on a special diet etc. Raw fruits and veggies are great for the digestive tract for anyone. Juicing is a great idea by the way. I think you have the right idea here. But, just be certain nothing is going to interact in a negative way with any medication or treatment."

Question about not being able to fight off colds...? I almost always have a cold to the point where I usually never go a week without a cold. The last time I did not have a cold was for three days at the end of this past December. Before and after that, cold after cold after cold, and I can't figure out why. I don't have any allergies, so that's not it. I was on Prednisone for almost 6 years, and I got off of it May of 2008, so I wonder if my immune system is not up to par yet. I also love orange juice, I wash my hands all of the time, and I use Purell, so I'm assuming everything I catch is airborne. My questions are: Why do I always have colds? Is there some condition where a person does nothing but catch colds? Is it my immune system? How would I know if it was my immune system (like what tests could I have done)? Any other relevant suggestions are welcome. To answer Dinah - I'm a pre-professional ballet dancer and competitive dancer. I also swim everyday and run. So, I get lots of exercise.

Dinah replied: "I don't know the cause but I know that regular endurance exercise really improves your immune system."

fullofquestions replied: "Any medications you take and the fact that you are clean can bring your immune system down - I know that sounds weird.. I wash my hands all of the time too and get lots of vitamins but I have an altered immune system too - its when our bodies no longer no how to fight off infections or germs on its own... we need to build up our immune system..Its almost like we are washing away the good bacteria (that actual fights off things)..In any case, have you ever been checked for diabetes or HIV - these are immune altering diseases...also you can ask for blood tests to check if you have any other auto immune dieases..these bring down your ability to fight off colds.. have you been to an allergist? because it may be allergies and you may just need a prescrip to be on like claritin, allergra..or something like that.. good luck! Try and Eat alot of GREEN veggies - they build up your immune system.. BTW dry air can sometimes cause these problems.. in the winter when its cold - the air is do dry it can cause this feeling also int he summer when youre around air conditioning it dries out the air so you may want to try getting a humidifier..."

I need some suggestions of alternative medicine for Nephrotic Syndrome? I have a 7 year old daughter with nephritic syndrome. She was diagnosed about 4 years ago. She has had many relapses. She was steroid resistant. Put on Prograf. Worked for awhile. Then she became steroid resistant. She had 4 doses of Rituxan. Prednisone is now working again but I am unable to wean hear from the prednisone without her spilling proteins. Any one know anything about Aloe Vera juice helping nephrotic syndrome? Or anything else? There has got to be something out there.

How do I entice my cat to eat more? I have a 5 year old calico cat who was recently diagnosed with contracting the hemobartonella parasite. The vet has her on doxycycline and prednisone. She is very skinny and still weak but she is making little improvements every day. The vet told us that one of the side effects of prednisone is increased thirst and appetite. She is definitely drinking more but her appetite is still not up to par. She's eating more than she was, but she's not eating enough. And she has become INSANELY finicky. One day she'll eat a certain food, the next day she'll turn her nose up at it. The vet told us to give her whatever she wants because she really can't afford to lose anymore weight. Every day I put out a buffet of different flavors and textures - sometimes she's interested and sometimes she isn't. If I give her canned food with gravy, she only licks the gravy and leaves the food, so I try to stay away from those but sometimes those are the only types of food I can get her to eat. I've tried giving her a little tuna and she's only interested in the juice. The fascination with the juice is understandable because she was dehydrated, but she isn't anymore. Sometimes I can get her to eat some ham, or chicken but not on a regular basis which is very frustrating. There isn't a single thing right now that I can say "Yes, she loves that." She was never a picky eater - in the past she would pretty much eat whatever I gave her. This has been going on only since she's been sick. We give her about a teaspoon of Nutrical in the morning and again at night. She is also getting about 10ml of Pedialyte twice a day to supplement her water intake. Ideally I would be able to give her some fresh food several times a day, but that is impossible because my husband and I both work during the day. I have tried multiple brands of foods. I am not even ruling out preparing a homemade meal for her, if she would eat it. I just want her to get better and gain some weight. Any advice would be most appreciated. I should mention that I understand the importance of a high-quality diet, and under normal circumstances I feed her a premium food. However, right now, LOUSY food is better than NO food.

Suzy Cutes replied: "Yes, this is a time when you "screw the rules," and just about anything goes, I've dealt with anemia in two cats, Baby Bars who passed at 20 years 2 months, and Rusty who just turned 18. Baby Bars, in his older years, developed Heinz anemia, which is a result of eating too much onion (who knew?). Rusty was constantly borderline anemic from IBD and just over a year ago developed severe anemia as a result of fleas; he was so bad that two vets didn't give him much hope to make it through the summer. The good news is, Rusty just celebrated his 18th birthday a week ago, and has actually gained 7 ounces in the past three months. One of the things I discovered with anemia is that the system seems to be off, with more nausea and more digestive issues, ergo less appeitite, even with appetite enhancers. A human nutritionist once told me that the lack of oxygen is a factor in the lack of appetite in anemic people, so I suspect that would hold true with any animal. I also know that there is a severe lack of oxygen in the body with anemia, which can affect physical as well as mental health. Armed with that info, at a desperate point, I gave Rusty an oxygen infusion with some diluted hydrogen peroxide. This is something to discuss with your vet; at Rusty's state at the time the vet had no objection. I also invested in the NASA list of oxygen-producing plants, and whether it has helped the cats (all of them) I don't know if I can say for sure, I certainly know I am more oxygenated, so I suspect they are also. I also gave both Bars and Rusty Pepcid, but this is something you should ask your vet about as each cat responds differently to it. I found yogurt to be tummy-soothing and appealing (again, damn the sloppy poop). For Bars I would frequently use yogurt instead of milk in his egg and food mix (see below). The probiotics in yogurt are great. You can add a touch of Metamucil and a teaspoon of canned pumpkin to counter any sloppy poop. Speaking of probiotics, in both cats I used enzyme/priobiotic supplements. The ones I still use for Rusty I get from Dr. Goodpet, and they are fungal based enzymes vs. pancreas ones. The enzymes have been a huge help in nutrient absorption and digestive stabilization. So, here are food suggestions. Okay, you are right. Even crappy food is better than no food. You said your cat liked to lick the gravy; ditto my Rusty (what a waste of food!) However, I found out that the wheat glutens in gravy foods can upset the digestive tract and inhibit nutrient absorption; two things you don't need in an anemic cat. I would take pate wet food, add water or tuna juice, a wee bit of the vitamin paste and liquefy it into a gravy. It went over very, very well. I found this worked well with Fancy Feast (they have non-gluten varieties and cats just seem to like it), Innova (pretty tasteless but dressed up with FF or vitamins helps) and Max Cat which also went over pretty well in the taste department. Yes, I started off with Friskies and 9-Lives tuna, desperate for any food, then moved to Fancy Feast and back to better quality. Both Baby Bars and Rusty loved their raw/lightly cooked egg yolks. Lots of protein, and if you can't fully remove the yolk, cook the egg lightly to make sure any white is cooked. With Bars, I mixed this with condensed full-fat milk (damn the sloppy poop) and vitamins and some pate cat food. Nummy! Baby Food is often appealing, but get onion-free turkey or chicken. Gerber still makes onion-free varieties. Mix in your enzymes, vitamins, and a little Metamucil for a firmer stool. Dry food. Because of other issues, Rusty needed to eat several times a day, and well, when you're out most of the day, then dry food is the option. I started Rusty out on kitten dry as he has no teeth, but it is higher in protein. Ask your vet about kitten food for your cat. It is more important to gain muscle weight than fat weight, as anemics will eat their own muscle for protein. Get a good quality dry; one that has meat as the first ingredient(s), with low-no grains, and try and avoid corn, wheat, wheat glutens, and soy. Dry food is "sprayed" with fats and vitamins to make it appealing to cats, and frequently a pungent aroma will help. I counted out how many kibble bits I left out each day so I could judge how much was being eaten, if any. At first it was only a few morsels, but a few morsels is better than no morsels. I also got some powdered vitamins (very flavorful) and used a sprinkle or two on the dry food for extra appeal. When it comes to home-made foods, on top of everything, I started feeding raw to the cats. I had a hard time with Rusty, but it is now about 30% of his diet. There are raw and cooked recipes on the internet, but bear in mind that if you commit to actually making your cats foods, you will need genuine supplements besides the vitamins. I use Feline Instincts, and they have a pretty idiot-proof raw recipe on their website. If you don't want to go so far as to try making your own food, it is perfectly alright to cook up some chicken; roasted or pan seared is much more flavorful than boiled; dark is usually more flavorful than white. Feeling brave? Let her try a little raw chicken. I give my cats raw chicken necks to chew (bones are not an issue when raw). The kitchen floor tends to get pretty messy, but it is soul-satisfying to see the cats enjoy themselves. Try and keep beef to a minimum, however, if she'll eat it, go for it. Again, try a little lean ground beef raw. If your cat seems to enjoy raw, you can mix a little raw in with the wet food, or consider going on a raw diet. While I know you just want to get some food in her belly, please do avoid ham/pork. The salt in these are incredibly high, and salt not only stresses a cat's kidney (dehydration), but inhibits potassium and electrolyte absorption, and those are the last thing you need when trying to rebuild red blood cells. When it comes to water, give your cat bottled or filtered water. The chlorine and Fluoride in public water supply is not only good for cats, particularly a compromised cat, but cats can smell it, and if a cat is off their drink or feed to begin with, these additives just make it worse. I found a huge improvement in water intake in all the cats when I switched to bottled water. Those little water fountains are appealing to cats and have been shown to improve water intake. Good luck. Baby Bars was anemic from the Heinz until the day he died, but at a ripe old age of 20, I think we handled the last three years of this life very well. Rusty has lots of good blood and, while it was a long, painstaking battle, he has gained a few ounces, is brighter and more sociable, and has a good appetite. I wish you the best of luck. As a note, when Baby Bars was at his worst at age 17, he did get a blood transfusion which helped greatly. My vet and I discussed that with Rusty but never did it."

Trouble swallowing... not sure why.? A few nights ago, I started having trouble swallowing... it's hard to describe. I don't STOP swallowing completely... it's like, for a split second or two, my throat muscles forgot what to do, and there is this momentary panic of "Oh my god I can't swallow!!" but If I drink something or eat something, I'm fine (no gagging or choking, knock on wood)... sometimes if I get that panicked feeling like I can't swallow, I tilt my head back and to the left, It seems to go away and I can swallow. I'm usually ok during the day, it's mostly at night. I do notice that I'm stuffy and it feels like my sinuses are draining down my throat (especially at night) that is the only problem I seem to have, my sinuses. I don't have any fever, no cough, no headaches, no sore throat... or any other symptoms of a flu or cold.. just a stuffy nose with sinus drainage. But I've never had this problem before even when I've had sinus drainage or colds and stuff. It's kind of a freaky feeling, like I said, your body gets this momentary panic of "oh my god, my throat isn't working"... I started taking 1 to 2 prednisone a day to make sure my throat doesn't swell shut. (Prednisone was Rx'ed to me to keep my throat from swelling shut when I have an asthma attack, so I thought it would work in this case too) then I take 2 Vitamin C Dayquils as needed throught the day... I'm taking a multivitamin 1x a day and I started drinking Orange Juice today (despite not really liking Orange Juice) for the vitamin C. Has anyone else had this problem before? was it sinus related? and if so, what did you take to stop your sinuses from draining down your throat so you could stop the swallowing problem... why do people feel they need to waste everyone's time by acting the fool when someone has a serious question? You think you're funny or clever? Hun, I've heard more clever thoughts coming from my dog's hind end.

Sarah L replied: "Just spit instead. Edit: Like the talking asshole from Naked Lunch? Badass. I am honored to be compared to such a dog. (I wish there were more people who take the internet as seriously as you do.)"

Love Hurts replied: "I think you might possibly be having allergy attacks from something. My mother has this where all of the sudden she cant swallow and her throat begins to swell shut, there can be other side affects occuring to an allergy. This is only a possibility, but either way... i'd talk to a doctor about this, and if you feel it might be an allergy, get an allergy test. sinuses, stuffy nose, are also a possible side affect of an allergy. occuring at night is when it happens for here also. anywho... TALK to a DR.!"

toots replied: "Prednisone is too dangerous a substance to be taking without very close medical supervision by a physician. It sounds to me that you suffer from "deliberate swallow syndrome". It's much harder for a non-impaired person to swallow if you're thinking about it. Post nasal drip can become very thick due to evaporation from mouth-breathing at night. Dimes to donuts, that's what the problem is. tilting the head back actually narrows the throat. You'd get better results by tucking your chin toward your chest, rotating your head to the left, and then swallowing. My guess is you sleep on your right side, which allows the secretions to pool on that side. By rotating your head to the left, that allows the gunk to go down more easily by widening the throat on the right. Get yourself a neti pot and use it before you go to bed. Either wash your pillow or buy a new one; dust mites are highly allergenic and they multiply very rapidly once they find a cozy home in a pillow. Feel better soon!"

Mystery Illness - Please Help!? I've suffered from musculoskeletal pain since 19 (I'm 42). Diagnosed with Graves Disease in 1992 at age 24. Went into remission and never had any permanent treatment. About 2 months ago, the following symptoms occurred in this order: 1.Significant hairloss (in male pattern). I have an identical twin and he does not have this problem. I took Minoxidil/Proscar/Avodart and it came back, so I'm fine here now, but it was a symptom. 2.Edema in the right foot, traveled to calf, then both legs, then abdomen, then upper arms. Skin feels sunburn. On the left arm, there is a diffuse light rash. Right arem is fine. 3.My skin is in pain whereever it touches or presses. The pain is sharp and sunburn feeling. 4.My arms, legs, hands, and feet fall asleep, completely numb in the middle of the night. 5.I'm a male, but, my skin in the arms, legs, butt and abdomen look like I've had 3 kids - I have cellulite appearance, stretch marks, wrinkles and bumps (that are hard and tender) underneath the skin (mainly in my inner thighs). And before you call it fat, keep in mind, I am 5'9/142lbs, exercise and mostly vegetarian. This has been going on for two months. I have done the Master Cleanse (I have thrush/Candida tongue) and about to start juicing. I've been to the doctors and this is what comes up consistently: *Elevated RF, Cortisol (went to normal on repeat), Aldosterone, FSH, Low Testosterone % (Total was fine). Nerve conduction study showed a muscle issue. I've seen Neurologist, Cardiologist, Vascular, Hemotologist, Nephrologist, Primary, Dermatologist. Rheum wants me to do Prednisone. All the other specialists think it's inflammation of unknown origin. All the standard tests for autoimmune have shown nothing. Standard inflammation tests are normal - CRP, etc; Dermatologist wants to do biopsy. My new age friend wants me to eat raw for several years blaming it all on diet (but she's a mess herself, so....). My twin brother did steriods, eats whatever he wants and currently has no health issues. I had pericarditis in 2006. My cardiologist believes it's all systemic. I am a very moody, anxious, ass and I used to think I was causing this by my personality, but, when I was on high dose prednisone for the pericarditis (almost died), my physical pain went away, but my mentality and personality changed to such a degree that I realized and I believe that I have chronic inflammation which causes my personality faults. I literally felt the way I did when I was 5 years old in my mind. I felt like I escaped my body and mind. That's how profound it was. I don't want to take prednisone because of the side effects, but I think what's important is to find out why or what is causing this. My Rheumatologist says, "regardless of what is causing it, you need to treat it". I'm on the fence, wanting to taking it to stop this flare because I DON'T want this edema and skin breakdown to be permanent (I'm still single trying to be a stud, you know). None of this is normal health. Any good advice, insight, feedback would be a blessing. Please only serious feedback. Thank you.

scorpio70 replied: "You have some symptoms of Fybromayalgia...I was diagnosed 5 years ago but had been suffering from the pain for about 3 years before that. They did all sorts of tests until the rheumatologist diagnosed me with FM. I touch my skin and it hurts like hell (yeah...that's the one that really trips me out). #5 and the Edima on your list are ponderers, however. I'm on Prednisone now and was a few years ago. I gained 35 lbs last time but now I exercise which knocks out that side effect. However, the long term effects suck. Don't take it unless you have no other options. That's the ONLY reason I'm on it again until she finds something else to fix my issues. I'm sorry that you are dealing with these problems. I'll pray that you get better."

nerdie replied: "You seem to be a potpourri of auto immune conditions - Grave's diz - Alopecia areata? Or androgenetic as you described - MSK pain - Pericarditis Polymyalgia rheumatica? Transverse myelitis? Prednisolone is probably the correct treatment."

Ohno replied: "Your rheumatologist says to treat it, but until you find the cause, you can only treat the symptoms. And, you must consider that the treatment will aggravate the REAL cause. I don't know where you are, but it would be worth it to travel to a good hospital, Mayo, Beth Israel, etc. to seek specialists. Deseases of the immune system can be elusive, and take special tests for detection. I'm thinking systemic lupus, porphyria, scleraderma (sp)"

Types of Intravenous Steroids include Triamcinilone, Betamethasone, and Prednisone (Santella 613.8). Teenagers are often users of Anabolic Steroids. Teens often acquire Anabolic Steroids from dealers at school, the Internet, or some types are even sold over the counter at local health stores. For that reason, a large amount of teenagers have access to the drug for their use. As for the reason teens use steroids, those who have admitted to taking them have said they used them to be better at sports, "fit in" or "be sexy" (Santella 613.8). Statistically, Male teens are more prone to use anabolic steroids than female teens, because males are more likely to try to get an advantage in sports. About 14% of athletes in the 12th grade were found to be using steroids, and about 13.3% of 10th grade were found to be using steroids (Santella 613.8). Teens have even made up their own slang terms for Anabolic Steroids. Some of these names include "juice", "gum", "candy", "pumpers", and "pops". "Arnolds", and "Stackers". Such slang terms can be used as "code names" in order to keep them secret from adults or authorities (Santella 613.8).

ajrackard replied: "An Anabolic Steroid is a powerful yet dangerous drug capable of adding desired muscle capacity to the human body at the expense of various drastic side-effects. The combination of natural and synthetic hormones coupled with vigorous physical training is designed to stimulate cell growth and division which in turn increases muscle tissue, strength, and stamina. (Wikipedia entry here) The seeming benefit of rapid muscle growth quickly diminshes when compared with the drastic negative effects of steroid use. The exhaustive list includes: scars, acne, insatiable sex drive, increased hair growth in Androgen-sensitive areas, deepened voice, elongated vocal cords, increased appetite, remodeling of physical bone structure, increased production of red blood cells, damaged liver, headaches, irritability, trouble sleeping and Jaundice. A male's penis size can permenantly alter from growth or shrinkage while developing breasts, premature balding, and testicular pain. Females are prone to the development of male-like features (Santella reference here) Several variations of Anabolic steroids exist both orally (Anadrol, Anavar, Dianabol, Maxibolin, methyltestosterone, Primobolin and Winstrol) (Santella reference here) and intravenously (Triamcinilone, Betamethapone and Prednisone). (Santella reference) Teenagers frequently acquire these steroids from dealers on their school campuses or over the internet while others are purchased over the counter from the local health food stores. Part of the attractiveness of the steroids is the ease of purchase Teens often site increased athletic ability when asked to justify the use of steroids as well as a desire to 'fit in' or 'be sexy.' (Santella reference) With the in-human body growth and increased physical capabilities, males are statistically more prone to abuse steroids than females. A shocking 14% of 12th grade athletes were caught using steroids and 13.3% in the 10th grade. (Santella reference here too) In an effort not to disclose discriminating information upon purchase, these steroids are referenced by several code names: Arnolds, Stackers, juice, gum, candy, pumpers and pops. It's not that great...and I can't believe I just typed all of that out"

eskimoomo replied: "Anabolic Steroids Anabolic Steroids are potent drugs that can have a lethal side effect on humans. However, there is a benefitial effect; it helps gain mass for the human body. This natural and artificial steriod is a type of hormone that incites the growth of cells and division. As a result, there is an increase of muscle tissue and strength. The effect can only occur if it is combined with physical training. Anabolic steriods can increase the chance to gain muscle mass, but with a downfall. The steroids have visual side effects such as acne and scares, increased hair growth in Androgen-Sensitive areas, an increase of sex drive, a lower and deep voice, larger muscles, immense appetite, bone remodeling, vast amount production of red blood cells, liver damage, headaches, arduous sleeping, and jaundice (Santella 613.8). In males, the penis may increase or decrease in its size, breasts can be formed, pre-mature balding, and terticular pain. In, females, development of man-like features may occur. Although, there are many types of anabolic steroids, there are mostly oral anabolic steroids and intravenous steroids. Oral steroids would be taken through the mouth as pills. Intravenous steroids are injected into the body in a non-harmful way. Teenagers are often users of anabolic steroids because they are sold at over the counter pharmacies or the internet. Many teenagers has ad access to these beneficial/harmful drugs. Some teenagers has took these steroids to bet "fit" or "sexy". More teenage males have been prone to these steroids to have a better chance in sports. Teens have even made up their own slang terms for anabolic steroids. The teenagers usually call them "juice, candy, gum, pumpers, or pops. Code names, "Arnold" and "Stackers, are used for secrecy of using these anabolic steroids from elders."

Mark F replied: "Anabolic steroids, or anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS), are a class of steroid hormones related to the hormone testosterone. They increase protein synthesis within cells, which results in the buildup of cellular tissue (anabolism), especially in muscles. Anabolic steroids also have androgenic and virilizing properties, including the development and maintenance of masculine characteristics such as the growth of the vocal cords and body hair. The word anabolic comes from the Greek anabolein, "to build up", and the word androgenic from the Greek andros, "man" + genein, "to produce". It is difficult to determine what percent of the population in general have actually used anabolic steroids, but the number seems to be fairly low. Studies in the United States have shown anabolic steroid users tend to be mostly middle-class heterosexual men with a median age of about 25 who are noncompetitive bodybuilders and non-athletes and use the drugs for cosmetic purposes. Another study found that non-medical use of AAS among college students was at or less than 1%. According to a recent survey, 78.4% of steroid users were noncompetitive bodybuilders and non-athletes while about 13% reported unsafe injection practices such as reusing needles, sharing needles, and sharing multidose vials, though a 2007 study found that sharing of needles was extremely uncommon among individuals using anabolic steroids for non-medical purposes, less than 1%. Another 2007 study found that 74% of non-medical anabolic steroid users had secondary college degrees and more had completed college and less had failed to complete high school than is expected from the general populace. The same study found that individuals using anabolic steroids for non-medical purposes had a higher employment rate and a higher household income than the general population. Anabolic steroid users tend to research the drugs they are taking more than other controlled-substance users; however, the major sources consulted by steroid users include friends, non-medical handbooks, and fitness magazines, which can provide questionable or inaccurate information."
